Shelter head lauded for low-income housing work
LOWELL — Deborah Chausse, executive director of the House of Hope shelter, was recognized last month for her work in creating affordable housing for low-income families.
She was honored by Homes for Families, a statewide advocacy organization.
“Deb Chausse has demonstrated true leadership in creating permanent solutions to the affordable-housing crisis,” said Stephanie Brown, executive director of Homes for Families.
Last fall, Chausse celebrated the ground-breaking of the three-story New Hope Apartments, being built behind the shelter on Salem Street. The apartments will provide housing for 10 homeless families.
The project was a cooperative effort by city and state officials, the Lowell Housing Authority and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Chausse previously served as director of Boston Homeless Services and on the boards of the Friends of Boston’s Homeless and the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance.
